Dr. Robert Gaspar’s Viewpoint: A Look on the Automotive Engine

Dr. Robert Gaspar is one of the majestic professionals who greatly contributed in the design and manufacture of today’s vehicles. Learn more about his works by taking a closer look at automotive engines that allow cars to function.

Your Car’s Engine

As it may appear to you, your car’s engine looks like a complicated piece of work that enables you to go places using your vehicle. Dr. Robert Gaspar simplified the idea of automotive engine also known as internal combustion engine through this article.

According to the majestic automotive engineer, your car’s engine is designed to use tiny and controlled explosions to create the much needed energy to allow a car to move. Dr. Robert Gaspar also noted that the internal combustion engine is also used in lawnmowers, motorcycles and other motorized equipment.
Over the years through the genius contributions of majestic engineers like Dr. Robert Gaspar, improvements on the design of the automotive engine have been made to enhance the efficiency and power of modern vehicles.

The Four-Stroke Combustion Cycle

Automotive engines require a four stroke combustion cycle to function. Dr. Robert Gaspar further explained that it includes the intake, the compression, the combustion, and the exhaust. According to Dr. Robert Gaspar, these 4-stroke combustion cycles are used over and over again in quick sequence to produce power and all of their parts take place within an enclosed car engine.

Dr. Robert Gaspar used a windmill as an example, to further explain how these engines work. He said that the windmill has arms that use the force of the wind to create motion. As the wind moves the windmill’s arms it is able to generate power that can be used to move heavy grinding stones or produce electricity.

The automotive engine works in the same way. Dr. Robert Gaspar said that the internal combustion uses small, controlled explosion allowing the piston of the engine to create movement and as soon as the energy from the explosion is depleted, another explosion occurs causing the pistons to create movement once again. The recurring cycle generates the power required to produce movement.

Dr. Robert Gaspar defined the piston as a piece of metal rod connected to a connecting rod by a crankshaft. During the intake cycle, the intake valve opens up causing the piston to create downward movement to start the cycle. The piston’s motion creates an air-filled cylinder and allows a small amount of gasoline to reach the vehicle’s engine.

In the compression cycle, the piston moves up and decreases the space of the air and fuel. The smaller the space, the greater the explosion so it is very important to make sure that the seal on this space is airtight to prevent lost of energy.

On top of the cycle, the spark plug creates a spark that ignites the gasoline. Dr. Robert Gaspar explained that the power of the explosion forces the piston to move downwards and if the spark does not happen at the right time, the explosion will not happen.

During the last phase of the stroke, the exhaust valve opens up so that gas wasted from the explosion can leave the car’s engine. The pressure of the recurring explosions causes the catalytic converter and muffler gas to move downwards. The air becomes free from larger pollutants and the exhaust leaves the car through its tailpipe.

Dr. Robert Gaspar also emphasized the important role of the speed of the cycle because it also determines the speed of the car. He noted that as the driver injects more amount of gas into the engine, increased movement on the engine pistons is also created resulting in a faster pace that increases the speed of the combustion cycle.

Finally, the spark plug is another vital component that plays a vital role in automotive engines. This component is the one that produces a spark to initiate explosion. With the help of majestic engineers like Dr. Robert Gaspar, designers of the spark plug never grow tired of trying to come up with valuable improvements. It is through the sparks created within a short period of time, that the engine is able to achieve greater speeds.
